How Do You Balance Theology and Cross-Cultural Training?
Sometimes people will talk about the difference between doctrine and practice or the so-called “theological parts” of the New Testament and the practical parts of the New Testament. In many ways I think that distinction receives far greater emphasis than it deserves. When you look at the Apostle Paul in his most “practical sections” he is dealing with rich theological themes. When you see his high soaring theological reflection what you find is that is eminently practical.
So in terms of balancing the need for theological rigor and practical skills of course there are practical skills that are required but the reality is this: that our best practical training has to be undergirded by our richest theological reflection.
